Personal Development

October 26, 2009 by bertram

Someone said to me recently “this isn’t working for me”.

This statement has a presupposition built into it –

the presupposition is that “it” had to “work” for “them”.

Not possible.

The truth is, with everything we do, we work it, not the other way around. This is the framework of 100% responsibility for our results and our non-results.

Rather than externalising what “caused” something to not work – keep it within you – you are the cause for the results you are getting. What you may choose to consider –

1. Nothing has meaning except the meaning you give it – “it” not working is a meaning, not a truth – it can’t be anything more than an interpretation you are bringing to the event

2. The quality of your life will improve the moment you own point 1

3. Decide before the event the meaning you will give it

4. If you don’t like how something is going, either change your beliefs, change your strategy or raise your standards – success is only a heartbeat away

5. Take 100% responsibility for how you “feel” about something – and if you know NLP you know how to change this feeling in a moment!

6. Look for patterns in what you like & dislike and determine if those choices serve you or hinder you and the outcomes you want

7. If your patterns hinder you, & you still do them, what is the secondary gain? What do you get out of that pattern?

8. Give up your stories about why things are the way they are, why you feel the way you do, what works & what doesn’t – it’s all unfolding exactly the way you want it to

9. If Point 8 pushed a button, go to Point 7

Warmest Regards,

Bertram

Thoughts

October 15, 2009 by bertram

After my morning meditation today I picked up Wayne Dyer’s book ‘Ten secrets for success and inner peace’ (which by the way is a brilliant book) and what I read I thought I would share it with you.

Suppose you had a choice between two magic wands. With Wand A, you can have any physical thing you desire by simply waving it. With Wand B, you can have a sense of peace for the rest of their life regardless of what circumstances arise. Which would you pick? A guarantee of stuff, or inner piece for the remainder of your life? If you opt for peace, then you already have Wand B. Simply have a mind that is open to everything but attached to nothing. Let it all come and go as it were. Enjoy it all, but never make your happiness or success dependent on an attachment to anything, any place, and particularly, any person.

I hope you enjoyed that.

What does community mean today

August 23, 2009 by bertram

As I make my way through this wonderful world I cannot help but notice that we do not have the same sense of community that we once had. We do not seem to be connected to each other like we used to be.

Gee, I sound like an old man having a winge and yet I do not consider myself old! Is it just me or do others feel the same way?

In today’s world of technology we do not have ample opportunity to get personal. Life is fast-paced and everyone seems to be in a rush. We dial the phone and we talk to machines. We spend long hours on the computer playing games, emailing one another or working with our web pages. Even in the office environment, we email the person in the cubicle 3 feet away instead of walking over to hand them a task list.

Don’t get me wrong. I love technology. I cannot imagine ever being without my computer and am guilty of spending a large part of my day working on line. The computer and Internet afford many opportunities. All I am saying is that as a result of the technological age of today’s world, our personal touch with one another is decreasing. We need to take full advantage of the opportunity to be personal. Humans are becoming strangers to one another. People are in a hurry to get on with the business of living and walk past each other on the street without even a nod.

A wise man once said “Do not bring me a problem without a solution, as well.” My solution is that maybe you get your head out of your computer now and then and connect with another person. When you walk down the street look at other people and connect with them.

I live in an apartment block and there have been occasions when I have passed someone in the basement carpark they have looked away and not connected. I have greeted others and been ignored. I do not get it. We are all the same. We all are one and yet some go through life, literally and metaphorically, with their eyes shut. What they do not understand is that we are a little community of our own.

And then there is the wider community. C’mon I’m sure we can do better than that. Make an effort to connect with someone today.

The power of the subconscious

June 21, 2009 by bertram

I was walking past an office building the other day and I noticed three men standing outside the building puffing on their cigarettes. What amazed me was that it was an insurance office and I could not help but think that these men who worked in the insurance industry must be aware of the statistics about smokers. I know that if you are a smoker; your insurance policy will have a loading on it and it will cost you more than a non-smoker.

So why would anyone who understands the frightening statistics about the health hazards of smoking continue to smoke?

I put it down to a number of different reasons including nicotine addiction, but the one that stands out for me is the power of the subconscious mind.

We now know that over 90% of what we do is governed by our subconscious mind. Yes, if you didn’t know that read it again. Over 90% of what you do is controlled by your subconscious. The beauty of it is that you can decide with your conscious mind, that you want to change a habit. The reality is that if you do not have the subconscious on your side you will not achieve it. I guess, it is like your conscious mind is the captain of the ship and the crew is the subconscious. The captain can give the orders, but if the crew don’t carry them out, it will not happen.

With that in mind it is important to ask how could anyone use their subconscious to help and assist them. There are numerous Cd’s, books and videos on this subject and the simplest would have to be through meditation. When in a relaxed state a persons subconscious mind is more open and able to accessed with new information that creates new neural pathways (new habits). Our old habits (old neural pathways) can be changed.

Another very effective way is to use a Life Coach. A good Life Coach will help and assist you to see where you are in life, then look at where you want to go in life and close that gap and get you there in a relatively short space of time, which includes getting rid of old bad habits. A good life Coach will be skilled in relating to your subconscious mind so that the changes you want and need to make happen; quickly and effectively.

The word – CAN’T

May 13, 2009 by bertram

When I was a young boy my grandmother used to say to me, “there is no such word as can’t.”

When you stop to think about it that is literally and metaphorically true, because the word is ‘cannot’.

Can’t is a word that is banned in my house. I like to substitute it for won’t.

Whatever situation you are in, whatever problems you are facing, however difficult….there is always a way out if you look (and then work) hard enough.

You already have the solutions to your problems – yet you may think that you are unable to see a ‘way out’.  Someone, somewhere, has been in the same situation (or worse) as you and now lives a happy, successful, and balance life.

How did they do it?

They accepted that THEY, and only they, were responsible for where and who they were and where and who they wanted to be in the future.

The first step is getting rid of your attachment to negative words – can’t being the first one.

Action Point:

What won’t you do that you think you can’t?

It is easy to find excuses where stepping out of your comfort zone’ is concerned.

We all do it, but very few people tackle it head on and just ignore that little voice saying that they can’t do something.
